Does knob-and-tube wiring always mean a whole-home rewire?

The right scope depends on what is still connected, its condition, earlier alterations and your plans. An assessment can support a targeted project or a broader replacement plan. Age alone does not describe every circuit, and a newer panel does not prove old branch wiring has been replaced.

Will you need to open every wall?

Access varies with the house and the wiring route. We discuss likely openings and available attic, crawlspace or open-wall access during planning. Your scope should state who handles patching, painting and other finish work; an initial assessment cannot reveal every concealed condition.

Should I arrange this before adding insulation?

Yes. Washington has specific conditions for loose or rolled insulation around existing knob-and-tube wiring, including a licensed contractor's survey, written certification and applicable inspections. Foam insulation is not allowed with knob-and-tube under that rule. We confirm the authority for your address and coordinate the electrical plan before insulation work.

Can we stay home while the rewiring is done?

That depends on the access and electrical work involved. Tell us which rooms and appliances you rely on so we can discuss sequencing and planned interruptions. We explain what can remain usable and what needs to be ready before each stage.
