The right work. A clear plan.

Home EV Charger Installation: what to expect.

An EV charger is a sustained electrical load, so the installation needs more than a nearby empty breaker position. The equipment rating, circuit design, panel capacity and location should be assessed together. A suitable lower-output or managed charging arrangement may be worth discussing before assuming a service upgrade is necessary.

A hardwired charger and a plug-in unit have different installation considerations. The correct choice depends on the equipment, its instructions and the electrical arrangement. Share the charger model and vehicle information before the circuit is designed.

Make the next step a good one.

A scope built around your home.

Assess capacity and placement

Review the existing electrical service and the route to your parking space. Discuss charging needs and any other major loads planned for the home.

Plan the installation

Confirm the charger connection, circuit and required protection. Outdoor equipment, detached garages and longer routes may need a different approach.

Coordinate completion

Arrange the applicable electrical permit and inspection and check the installed connection. Vehicle settings, app accounts and subscriptions remain with the chosen equipment provider.

Before the appointment

Choose a practical cable reach without crossing a walkway or straining the connection. Share the equipment specifications before purchase where possible. For shared parking, a condominium or rental property, obtain the relevant property approvals and confirm who controls the electrical service.

Clear expectations. Better decisions.

What affects the price?

Panel capacity, charger location, route length, trenching, equipment connection and any service upgrade affect the estimate. The charger purchase and electrical installation should be identified separately. Rebate availability is checked for the actual utility and product rather than assumed.

Your written estimate should identify the equipment, electrical work, access, permits and any separate trades or finish restoration. Ask about anything you do not see included.

Local planning—not a one-size-fits-all job.

A Seattle detached garage, a Lynnwood driveway and a Bellevue shared-parking space bring different routing and permission questions. We assess the exact address and equipment; utility capacity, city permits and association approvals are separate parts of the plan when applicable.

Most electrical work requires a permit and inspection through the authority responsible for the address. We obtain the electrical permit for work we perform when required. Utility-service approval is a separate step when applicable. Washington electrical permit guidance ↗

Will I need a panel upgrade for an EV charger?

Not always. A load assessment and your charging needs determine the options. Suitable equipment settings or managed charging may be possible in some installations; others need more capacity.

Can you install a charger I already purchased?

Share its model and instructions before scheduling. We confirm compatibility, electrical requirements and any installation limitations at your property.

Is a plug-in charger always easier to install?

Not necessarily. Receptacle requirements, equipment ratings and the existing circuit matter. We compare the appropriate hardwired or plug-in arrangement for the selected product.

Financing depends on lender approval. Wisetack publishes amounts of $500–$65,000, APRs of 0%–35.9%, and terms of 3–120 months for home services. Your amount, APR and term depend on the transaction, creditworthiness, merchant and lending partner; state rate limits may apply. Some merchants and lenders do not offer 0% APR or extended terms. Wisetack reports no origination charges, late fees or early-payoff penalties. Review the lender’s actual payment schedule and agreement before accepting financing. This worksheet adds no financing fees and makes no approval decision. Wisetack’s current FAQs (opens in a new tab)

Calculation and rounding details

Monthly payments are rounded to cents. The total uses the unrounded payment formula; the final payment is adjusted so the displayed payments add up. Actual lender calculations and payment dates may differ.

This models equal monthly periods at a fixed APR without added financing fees. Compare the lender’s actual schedule before making a decision. Your entries stay in this calculator; it does not save them or send them with a service request.
