The right work. A clear plan.

Outdoor Lighting Installation: what to expect.

Outdoor lighting should help you see without putting glare into your windows or your neighbor’s yard. Porch lights, wall fixtures, motion-controlled lights and deck lighting have different purposes. We help define the zones and controls before running new wiring.

The electrical design must account for exposure, mounting surfaces and available circuit capacity. A covered porch and an exposed exterior wall are not the same environment. Wiring routes and penetrations also need coordination with siding, roofing and waterproofing work.

Make the next step a good one.

A scope built around your home.

Plan the useful light

Identify entrances, steps and activity areas. Discuss beam direction, controls and how the light will look from inside the home.

Review equipment and routes

Select equipment suitable for its location and plan connections, protection and access. New exterior circuits may require additional work at the panel.

Coordinate operation

Timers, photocells and motion sensors should support your routine. We explain the controls and clarify any landscape or building-envelope restoration outside the electrical scope.

Before the appointment

Decide whether you need general area lighting or a more focused landscape-lighting project. Share evening photos and the desired fixture locations. Where a trench or new route is needed, coordinate before hardscape and planting work is completed.

Clear expectations. Better decisions.

What affects the price?

The number of fixtures, circuit availability, mounting height, exterior routing and controls affect pricing. New circuits, trenching and finish repair should be clearly identified. Equipment intended for different exposure conditions can also change the budget.

Your written estimate should identify the equipment, electrical work, access, permits and any separate trades or finish restoration. Ask about anything you do not see included.

Local planning—not a one-size-fits-all job.

For an Edmonds entry exposed to the weather, a Seattle driveway or a Lynnwood covered deck, the installation conditions matter. We consider the property layout, neighboring windows and access to existing circuits rather than treating brighter fixtures as the only solution.

Most electrical work requires a permit and inspection through the authority responsible for the address. We obtain the electrical permit for work we perform when required. Utility-service approval is a separate step when applicable. Washington electrical permit guidance ↗

Can you add motion sensors or timers?

Yes, where suitable for the selected lighting and wiring. We discuss what should activate the lights and how you want to override automatic operation.

Is landscape lighting the same as outdoor lighting?

Landscape lighting focuses on paths, planting and architectural features. Outdoor lighting also covers entries, decks and work areas. The categories can overlap, but the equipment and routing may differ.

Can you replace an old exterior fixture at the same spot?

Often, after checking the mounting, connection and condition of the existing wiring. Damage or unsuitable equipment may require a broader repair.

Financing depends on lender approval. Wisetack publishes amounts of $500–$65,000, APRs of 0%–35.9%, and terms of 3–120 months for home services. Your amount, APR and term depend on the transaction, creditworthiness, merchant and lending partner; state rate limits may apply. Some merchants and lenders do not offer 0% APR or extended terms. Wisetack reports no origination charges, late fees or early-payoff penalties. Review the lender’s actual payment schedule and agreement before accepting financing. This worksheet adds no financing fees and makes no approval decision. Wisetack’s current FAQs (opens in a new tab)

Calculation and rounding details

Monthly payments are rounded to cents. The total uses the unrounded payment formula; the final payment is adjusted so the displayed payments add up. Actual lender calculations and payment dates may differ.

This models equal monthly periods at a fixed APR without added financing fees. Compare the lender’s actual schedule before making a decision. Your entries stay in this calculator; it does not save them or send them with a service request.
