Decide what you want to improve
Make a short list of lights that run for long periods, are difficult to reach or leave a task area uncomfortable. Record the existing bulb or fixture information from packaging and paperwork, plus roughly how long it operates. Leave high fixtures and electrical covers for the crew to inspect.
Replacing a frequently used incandescent light and replacing a working LED are different decisions. The first may offer a substantial reduction in power use; the second may mainly improve color, glare or controls. Keep those goals separate when comparing options. A rarely used light may still deserve attention if it is unsafe or does not serve the room well.
Estimate energy use with your own numbers
Use lumens to compare light output and watts to compare power. The FTC gives a useful example: an approximately 800-lumen incandescent bulb may use 60 watts, while an LED with similar output may use about 9 watts. Check the actual packages rather than treating that example as every product’s specification.
For a hypothetical replacement operating three hours a day, that 51-watt difference amounts to about 56 kilowatt-hours over a year: watts saved × daily hours × 365 ÷ 1,000. Multiply by your electricity rate per kilowatt-hour to estimate the energy-charge difference. Fixed bill charges do not disappear.
Then compare the purchase and installation costs. Changing run time, adding more fixtures or including smart-device standby power changes the calculation. Energy savings alone may not recover every part of a decorative lighting remodel.
Choose the right amount of change
If you like the existing fixture, ask whether an appropriate replacement bulb gives the light you want. Check its base, physical fit, fixture wattage limit, enclosure suitability and any moisture or operating-temperature restrictions. An LED label does not make every bulb suitable for every globe, outdoor fixture or cold garage.
A recessed retrofit module, a complete new fixture and a bulb replacement have different compatibility and future maintenance questions. Ask what remains in place and what can be replaced later. Integrated LED construction does not automatically mean better optics or that the entire fixture must always be discarded; serviceable parts depend on the specific design.
Try the light in the room
Brightness, the appearance of white light and the way objects look under it are separate choices. The Kelvin value describes a warmer or cooler appearance; it does not measure brightness. Compare samples beside the finishes, artwork or work surfaces you actually use, including after dark.
DOE explains that color rendering metrics describe how faithfully a source shows object colors. A high CRI can be useful, but it is not a promise that every person will prefer the result. Avoid choosing a whole house from one number. Check a suitable sample in its intended fixture, at the brightness you expect to use, before buying the full quantity.
Check the bulb and dimmer as a pair
A dimmable bulb still needs a compatible control. Philips Hue’s guidance distinguishes conventional LED dimming from smart bulbs with built-in dimming electronics. Tell the installer whether you want wall dimming, app control or both, and have the exact products checked together.
Agree on a usable low setting, reliable starting and normal shutoff. Report flicker, buzzing or inconsistent operation instead of assuming a new dimmer will cure it. Product compatibility, loading, configuration and electrical faults can need different attention. If there is unusual heat, a burning smell or damaged equipment, stop using it and seek professional help.
Treat fluorescent tube conversions as a system
Tubes that fit the same sockets can require different electrical arrangements. Manufacturers distinguish ballast-operated Type A lamps, ballast-bypass Type B lamps and Type C lamps with an external LED driver. Some products support more than one arrangement. Have the electrician identify the existing fixture and a suitable conversion or replacement.
For example, Philips UniversalFit instructions require a ballast on the compatible list and specify an operating-temperature range. That is why neither tube length nor an instant-start claim settles suitability. Leave fixture rewiring to a qualified electrician; do not mix tube types or improvise a bypass.
Include removal and recycling in the proposal. EPA recommends recycling fluorescent lamps because they contain mercury; confirm the current local collection option before transporting them.

Read lifetime and warranty as different promises
A rated LED life commonly describes the point at which light output has declined to a stated level, rather than a date on which every unit will stop working. DOE also notes that electronic components can fail and light color can change. The product warranty is a separate document with its own coverage and conditions.
For a tall entryway or exterior soffit, ask how a future lamp, driver or fixture would be accessed. Keep replacement-part information and clarify whether a warranty includes labor. A long rated life can help the maintenance plan, but it does not eliminate the need for safe access.
Agree on a scope you can compare
Request a room-by-room proposal naming the products, controls, electrical changes, access equipment and finish repairs. Separate the lighting you need now from optional additions. Ask the contractor to confirm permit requirements for the actual work and address; a bulb change and new wiring are different scopes.
At handoff, try the lights and controls in normal use, keep the manuals and record any selected settings. If existing lighting already works well, an upgrade can wait for a broader project. If it leaves you struggling to cook, read or move comfortably, solving that problem may matter as much as the energy calculation.
