Map what happens below the ceiling
Mark counters, tables, seating, artwork, doors and major furniture on a simple floor plan. Note the places that currently feel dark and where existing light bothers you. Include planned cabinet or furniture changes; a layout based on an empty room may miss the surfaces that matter later.
Discuss general illumination, task lighting and accents separately. Recessed downlights can be part of the plan alongside pendants, wall lights or under-cabinet lighting. For a kitchen, consider where a person stands while preparing food so light is not blocked from the work surface. For a living room, include the view from the sofa and the television screen.
Use the chosen fixture’s light distribution
Ceiling height alone does not determine spacing or the number of lights. The selected output, beam distribution, mounting height above the task, room surfaces and desired effect all matter. Ask the designer or electrician to use the manufacturer’s photometric information, which describes how that fixture distributes light.
For example, HALO’s LT4 data includes beam information, measured output and spacing criteria for particular models. Those values belong to those products; they are not a universal room-spacing formula. Review the proposed locations against your furniture and task plan before approving them. A broad general-lighting pattern and a focused artwork accent solve different problems.
Review comfort from the places you use
Ask how the light source is shielded from normal viewing angles and whether an adjustable or different trim would help. A small ceiling opening does not by itself guarantee low glare. Look at the proposed fixture from a seated position, from adjoining rooms and near reflective surfaces where possible.
Compare the selected white-light appearance with other lighting that will remain. Kelvin describes warm or cool appearance; color-rendering information addresses how objects look under the light. DOE notes that a single color metric has limits. A sample with your paint, wood and countertop is more useful than treating one color temperature as right for every home.
Choose a system that suits the existing ceiling
An LED retrofit module uses a suitable existing recessed housing. A canless system removes the traditional can but still needs its specified electrical connections, mounting space and driver arrangement. Neither description guarantees compatibility with the ceiling already in your home.
Have the electrician identify existing housings, cutout sizes, ceiling thickness, framing and available access. Cooper’s retrofit instructions require the specified housing construction and dimensions; its canless products have their own requirements. Agree on acceptable alternate positions if a joist, pipe or duct occupies the first choice. Avoid cutting exploratory holes yourself or buying the whole fixture quantity before these checks.

Keep insulation, air leakage and location ratings separate
If insulation will contact the fixture, the installation needs equipment approved for that contact and installed as directed. An IC rating addresses insulation contact. Airtight performance addresses air leakage. ENERGY STAR’s criteria describe these separately; an IC label alone does not establish an airtight installation.
For a ceiling below an unconditioned attic, ask how the complete opening and specified sealing details will be handled. Do not cover an existing non-IC housing with insulation or pack foam around equipment as a shortcut. An LED replacement does not automatically change the housing’s limitations.
Also identify moisture exposure, sloped ceilings and any fire-rated ceiling assembly. The electrician should confirm the exact fixture and installation are suitable for each condition. IC and airtight labels do not answer every location or ceiling-assembly question.
Group controls around everyday use
Decide which lights should operate together and which deserve a separate control. A kitchen’s task area, dining table and general light may need different levels. Identify every doorway or location from which someone should operate the lights, including visitors who will use a physical switch.
Have the exact dimmer and fixture combination checked against current manufacturer information. Dimmable does not promise identical performance with every control or a barely visible minimum level. Confirm the expected range, starting behavior and shutoff. If you want schedules or app control, include any required wiring, accessories, network setup and ordinary offline operation in the scope.
Coordinate access, permits and restoration
A finished ceiling needs a different work plan from an open remodel. Ask how wiring reaches each location, what access is required above or below the room and which surfaces may need repair. Confirm responsibility for moving furniture, protecting the room, patching openings and painting.
The contractor should confirm permit and inspection requirements for the work and address. L&I says most electrical work requires a permit, with specific exceptions, and inspections must be requested before work is covered. Coordinate the required inspection and approval with insulation and drywall work. An existing switch in the room does not establish that no additional circuit or wiring assessment is needed.
Confirm the layout before work and the settings afterward
Review a marked plan showing fixture models, intended locations, control groups and any agreed alternatives. Include access, restoration, permit coordination and configuration in the written estimate. If an obstruction changes the layout, agree on the revision before permanent openings are made.
At completion, try the lighting for the tasks you planned, including lower settings and entry controls. Record the selected color and output settings, save product and dimmer information, and ask how components can be serviced later. Report flicker, noise or inconsistent behavior for assessment rather than assuming the only answer is a different dimmer.
