Start with the exact generator and manual
Find the model and serial number in your installation paperwork or on an accessible label. Keep the owner's manual, transfer-switch information and last service invoice together. If the paperwork is missing, use the manufacturer's lookup tool or ask your service provider to identify the equipment. A manual for a similar-looking generator is not enough.
Use the manufacturer's product lookup to match the engine, fuel type and model rather than assuming every standby unit shares the same schedule.
This guide helps you organize ownership and arrange service. It does not walk you through engine work, electrical testing or fuel-system repairs. Standby equipment can start automatically, so leave service access and maintenance procedures to qualified personnel.
Use calendar dates and running hours
Read each task's interval separately. A manual may specify elapsed time, operating hours or whichever arrives first. Initial break-in work, normal service and checks during continuous operation can have different deadlines. An annual appointment alone may not cover everything after a long outage.
Generac explicitly describes its online maintenance schedule as a reference and directs owners to the specific manual. Do the same when comparing a service plan: ask how its visits align with your model's schedule and what happens if runtime brings a task forward.
- Record the last completed service date and hour-meter reading.
- Write the next due date and hour threshold for each applicable task.
- Assign responsibility for checking hours and arranging the next visit.
Know what the exercise cycle tells you
Ask your provider to document the configured exercise day, time and frequency. Follow your model's instructions; there is no single weekly or biweekly setting that suits every generator. You should know what normal operation sounds like from a safe distance and how to view the ordinary owner status information.
An exercise run is useful information, but it does not by itself prove that the house will transfer correctly or that all intended loads will work during an outage. Ask whether your model exercises under load and how the transfer system is checked.
Report missed runs or unexpected alerts. Do not repeatedly clear faults, force a start or change modes just to make the display look ready.
Keep owner checks simple and observable
Agree with your provider which observations are appropriate and how often to make them. Use safe, accessible positions. Avoid reaching into the enclosure, working around a running unit or removing panels.
Take note of changes: visible damage, material collecting around ventilation openings, unusual sounds or a new fault message. Keep the model's required clearances in mind when landscaping or storing items nearby. Have vegetation or obstructions addressed safely; do not improvise a cover or enclosure.
Write down the exact alert and when it appeared. If fuel odor suggests a leak, leave the area and contact emergency services or the fuel utility from a safe location. Do not investigate connections or operate nearby switches.
Ask what the service visit will include
A useful estimate identifies your equipment and the work actually due. Engine tasks can include oil, filters, ignition components and adjustments, depending on the model. Liquid-cooled equipment has additional systems. Ask which parts and specifications apply instead of comparing plans only by a generic checklist.
Discuss battery and charging-system assessment, fuel-system checks and any manufacturer updates with a provider qualified for that equipment. Electrical wiring and transfer-switch work belong with a properly licensed electrical contractor; fuel work may require a separately qualified provider. Confirm who will handle each part.
Ask whether the visit includes a controlled transfer or load test, how household power will be interrupted and which loads will be checked. A documented test has a defined scope; it is not a promise that equipment can never fail.
- Request the service findings, completed tasks and recorded operating hours.
- Ask about unresolved faults, recommended repairs and the next due work.
- Keep the report with the model's service schedule for the next technician.
Make a plan for a long outage
Before a storm, ask how your model's continuous-operation checks and service needs will be handled. Some tasks become due while the equipment is supporting the house. Agree on the safe service process with the provider, including any planned interruption, rather than discovering those requirements in the dark.
Record outage runtime, alerts and loads that did not operate as expected. Review the schedule when normal power returns. A cleared maintenance reminder should correspond to completed work in the record.
If someone relies on powered medical equipment, arrange a separate contingency plan with their care team and equipment supplier. Maintenance improves preparedness; it cannot eliminate every interruption.
Protect the installed clearances and CO precautions
A standby generator's location and clearances depend on its installation instructions and applicable requirements. Do not apply a distance from another model or from portable-generator guidance to an installed standby unit. Before adding a fence, deck, roof or planting nearby, ask the installer to review the change.
Keep working CO alarms on every level of the home and outside sleeping areas, with battery power or backup, following their instructions. If an alarm sounds or anyone develops symptoms suggesting CO exposure, get outside to fresh air and call 911. Do not go back inside to locate the cause.
Using a portable instead? Follow its own rules
A portable generator needs its own maintenance and operating instructions. CPSC says to operate portable generators outdoors at least 20 feet from homes and buildings, with exhaust directed away from windows, doors and vents. A garage or shed is unsafe even with doors open. Follow the manufacturer's wet-weather instructions without moving the unit into an enclosed space.
Never feed a home's wiring by plugging a generator into a wall outlet. Have any connection to household circuits designed and installed by a qualified electrical contractor. For a portable that needs refueling, shut it off and let it cool first, as CPSC directs. These precautions do not turn a standby service checklist into a portable operating manual.
Have the right information ready for service
Share the model, serial number, fuel type, last service record, current running hours and exact alert text when arranging maintenance. Mention equipment added to the home since installation and any recent outage problems. That helps the provider plan the visit and discuss whether the backup system still fits your priorities.
Confirm access, expected power interruptions, scope and price before work starts. If the home's maintenance history is unknown, say so. Establish a reliable starting record rather than guessing what the previous owner did.
