Our recommendation
Generac is our starting recommendation for a flexible residential standby project: a broad home-generator lineup, connected monitoring options and an established approach to automatic transfer and load management. We still size the system around your home, fuel supply and priorities.

| Brand / featured system | Product highlights | A strong fit for | What to consider |
|---|---|---|---|
| Generac Guardian 26 kW Live Wire pick |
| A well-rounded automatic standby project with connected monitoring options. | Choose the exact model, fuel rating and transfer package together; whole-home coverage still needs a load calculation. |
| Cummins QuietConnect RS20A |
| Residential standby with a sound-attenuated, weather-protective enclosure. | Compare the actual model and local service plan; an industrial brand name does not size the generator for your house. |
| Briggs & Stratton PowerProtect+ DX 26 kW |
| A Vanguard-powered standby system with front-facing exhaust and connected monitoring. | PowerProtect and PowerProtect+ model generations differ. Compare the specific quoted unit rather than transferring specifications between them. |
| Kohler Kohler 26RCA |
| A 26 kW-class system with generator-only and transfer-switch package choices. | RCA and RCAL packages can include different equipment. Check the transfer-switch contents instead of comparing generator-only prices. |
| Champion Power Equipment 22 kW fleX system |
| A homeowner comparing a packaged generator-and-transfer-switch system. | fleX and aXis are different product families. Match the controller, transfer switch and load-management accessories to the actual system. |
How we chose: We favor a well-rounded residential backup solution, useful monitoring and flexibility in the installed design. This is Live Wire’s recommendation, not a laboratory test or a promise that one generator is best for every property.

Products & local serviceThe right plan comes first.
Refrigeration, furnace controls, lighting, internet and a sump pump may matter more than backing up every electric appliance at once. Tell us what an outage interrupts.
Generator location, approved clearances, the fuel connection, electrical routing, transfer equipment and permit requirements all belong in the same plan.
Compare equivalent load coverage and included work. A bare generator price is not a complete installation quote. Ask what is included for startup, testing and future service.
A few good questions.
Have a project-specific question?
Talk it through with the crew.
No. The switch’s rating and the generator’s output are different. The usable backup load is limited by the generator and the system design; large loads may need management.
Not always. Many models have different ratings by fuel. We use the manufacturer’s rating for your actual fuel and account for the starting demand of motors.
Yes. Tell us the brand, model and what is happening. We can review electrical connections, transfer equipment and the scope of troubleshooting; engine or warranty work may need manufacturer service coordination.
